A time I could not use my mobile phone was during a hiking trip in a remote mountain area. It happened last year when I went there with three friends for a day hike.

About an hour after leaving the main road, all of us lost phone signal. There was no mobile data and calls would not connect. We had expected weak coverage, but I did not realise it would disappear completely for several hours.

At first, I felt uncomfortable because I normally use my phone for maps, messages and checking the weather. Fortunately, one friend had downloaded an offline map before the trip, so we could still follow the route. We also had a printed trail map at the visitor centre, which helped us confirm a junction. Since we could not send updates, we simply stayed together and followed the planned path. After reaching a higher viewpoint, the signal returned briefly, and I sent a message to my family saying everything was fine.

I felt slightly cut off at first, but after a while I stopped checking the phone and enjoyed the walk more. The experience showed me that I can do without constant connection for a few hours, as long as I prepare properly and have offline information.

A recent event that made me very happy was passing a professional English exam that I had been preparing for. I received the result about a month ago while I was at home.

I had studied for the exam for several months because I wanted a clear goal to improve my English. On the day the result was released, my sister was at home with me. I had tried not to think about it too much, but I kept checking my email.

In the afternoon, a message finally arrived. I opened the result page and saw that I had passed with a score slightly higher than I expected. For a few seconds, I simply stared at the screen. Then I called my parents and shared the news. That evening, my family had a small celebration at home with takeaway food and a cake my sister bought on the way back from work. It was simple, but everyone was genuinely pleased for me.

The result made my day because it showed that months of regular practice had paid off. I felt proud not only of the score but also of staying consistent. The event gave me motivation to set another learning goal instead of stopping there.

I received my first cellphone when I was about thirteen years old. It happened at home just before I started a new school year, and my father gave it to me.

It was not a new smartphone. It was a basic handset that had previously belonged to my father. The screen was small, there was a physical keypad and the main features were calls, text messages and a simple camera. He also bought me a prepaid SIM.

My parents gave me the phone because I had started travelling to school more independently and they wanted an easy way to contact me. The first evening, my father showed me how to save numbers, send a text message and check the remaining credit. I remember carefully adding the phone numbers of my parents, grandparents and two close friends. For the first few weeks, I hardly used it for anything except short calls and messages, but simply having my own number felt exciting.

I felt surprisingly grown-up because the phone represented a little more independence. Looking back, it was extremely simple compared with today's devices, but it was useful for keeping in touch. I also liked that it had been handed down rather than bought just because I wanted something new.

A time I looked for information on the internet was when I was planning a short weekend trip to Da Lat. I did the research about two weeks before travelling.

I wanted practical travel information rather than general inspiration. I needed to know which area would be convenient for accommodation, how long local journeys would take and which places were worth visiting during a limited two-day schedule.

I started with a map to understand the distance between the city centre and several attractions. Then I checked official pages for opening hours and searched travel websites for recent visitor comments. I compared sources because some older articles gave different prices and schedules. After that, I made a short list of hotels and checked reviews about noise, cleanliness and location. This helped me narrow down the options to two places. I finally chose the one closer to restaurants and public transport, even though it was slightly more expensive.

I searched online because the information was spread across many sources and could change over time. The internet made it possible to compare details quickly and make an informed choice. Without that research, I probably would have spent more time travelling between places during a very short trip.

A piece of technology I like using, apart from a computer, is a pair of wireless earbuds. I use them almost every day for music, podcasts and phone calls.

I first became interested in wireless earbuds after seeing friends use them during commutes. My old wired earphones often became tangled in my bag, so I decided to try a wireless pair. Setting them up was simple because they paired with my phone automatically after the first connection.

I usually wear them when walking, travelling on public transport or doing simple housework. The noise cancellation is especially useful on buses because it blocks out some background noise without forcing me to raise the volume too much. The battery case also means I can recharge them several times without a cable. Last month, they came in handy during a long train journey because I listened to podcasts for several hours and used one earbud for a work call.

I like them because they are small, convenient and easy to use on the move. They are not essential, but they remove several small inconveniences from daily life. For me, that is exactly what useful technology should do.
